Bandipora District Profile

Bandipora is newly carved District from erstwhile Baramulla District  .The district is surrounded by Himalayan Mountains having Kargil District on north, Kupwara in West, Baramulla in south and Ganderbal in east. The district has a population of 457842, about 85% population of District lives in villages and agriculture is the mainstay of the majority of the people in the district. In Bandipora district the farmers with small holdings are forced to undertake other activities for earning their livelihood. Manufacturing of Carpets, embroidering, dairy, fishing are other important economic activities. Bandipora District comprises of Five CD Blocks  .These blocks are spread over 124 villages. Wular lake is spread through the heart of the district serving as attraction for tourists and source of livelihood for people on peripheries. Most of the people are farm dependent with handicratfts as subsidiary occupation.  Block Gurez has a cropping season of five months from May to September and is located at an elevation of 8700feets above the sea level. It has unique agro climatic conditions of low temperature even during summer months. It remains covered under the snow for more than seven months. 90% of the population depends upon the Agriculture as livelihood with only small holdings.
